Hi, My name is Mariam Bennouna.
During my coaching sessions, I use Mindfulness techniques a lot to help my clients reduce their stress level. I would even say that some of my clients have mastered Mindfulness techniques that they are now familiar with managing their stress and balancing it out.
Let's define first what Mindfulness is. I like to use this analogy:
Mindfulness acts like a spotlight for your inner world, helping you see yourself more clearly.
Coming from Buddhist origins, Mindfulness is a state of mind that should be practiced everyday to be able to have the expected impact on our life. Mindfulness is the practice of paying full attention to the present moment without judgment. It is about being aware of your thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations without reacting to them.
Here are some important points about Mindfulness:
Like meditation, it is a skill that can be learned and improved with practice.
It entails concentrating on the ''here and now'' rather than dwelling on the past or future.
It teaches us to be more aware of our own thoughts and feelings without getting caught up in them.
It can result in increased calmness, clarity, and focus.
As a stress coach, I use Mindfulness techniques to help my clients learn how to manage / reduce their stress levels. In fact, mindfulness is a powerful tool to do that for 3 major reasons:
1. Mindfulness reduces stress:
Mindfulness is about learning to focus on the present moment and observe your thoughts and feelings without judgment. It helps you become less reactive to stress triggers.
a. Lowering the Stress Response: The amygdala is a part of the brain that plays a key role in our stress response. Mindfulness practice has been shown to reduce activity in the amygdala, which means our bodies are less likely to go into overdrive when we face stress.
b. Acceptance and Detachment: Mindfulness teaches us to accept our emotions, even negative ones, without judgment. This doesn't mean you have to like them, but it allows you to observe them without getting overwhelmed by them. With practice, you can learn to detach from intense emotions and respond more calmly.
2. Mindfulness improves self-awareness:
Practicing Mindfulness can help you identify early signs of stress in your body and mind. This allows you to take steps to manage stress before it escalates. Mindfulness acts like a spotlight for your inner world, helping you see yourself more clearly by:
a- Observing Your Thoughts: We all have a constant stream of thoughts running through our heads. Mindfulness helps us become aware of these thoughts without judgment. By simply noticing them, we can start to see patterns and identify recurring thoughts that might be influencing our emotions or behaviours.
c- Understanding Your Emotions: Our emotions can be confusing sometimes. Mindfulness allows us to step back and observe our emotions as they arise, rather than getting swept away by them. This can help us identify the root causes of our emotions and understand how they affect us.
c- Tuning into Body Sensations: Mindfulness encourages us to pay attention to the physical sensations in our bodies. This can be helpful in recognizing tension or discomfort that might be linked to stress or anxiety. By becoming more aware of these physical cues, we can learn to manage our emotions more effectively.
d- Seeing Your Reactions: Often, we react on autopilot without even realizing it. Mindfulness helps us become aware of the space between a stimulus and our response. This allows us to choose our reactions more consciously, rather than being controlled by them.
3. Mindfulness increases emotional regulation:
Mindfulness helps you develop a sense of calm and acceptance, which can be helpful in managing difficult emotions that often accompany stress.
a. Reduced Reactivity: Our brains have a natural stress response, and mindfulness helps us become aware of our thoughts and emotions before we react to them. This allows us to take a pause and choose a more constructive response to stressful situations. Think of it like hitting the brakes before you fly off the handle.
b. Lowering the Stress Response: The amygdala is a part of the brain that plays a key role in our stress response. Mindfulness practice has been shown to reduce activity in the amygdala, which means our bodies are less likely to go into overdrive when we face stress.
I can guide you in various Mindfulness techniques like meditation, body scans, and mindful breathing exercises. Nevertheless, I highly recommend to practice these techniques on a daily basis at home, for the best and long-lasting expected benefit.
